  • Middle and upper class Black woman formed their own clubs
  • Black women's clubs concerned with same social issues as white clubs as well as
      - Lynching
      - Segregation

  • Popularity of women's clubs grew in 1880s
  • Outlet for middle and upper class women
  • Concerned with social betterment
      - Education and school reform
      - Settlement houses
      - Planting trees
      - Building hospitals
